LIMA, Jan 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Interior Minister Vicente Romero called on the population to trust the National Police and Armed Forces, in the face of the mobilization set to take place on Thursday in the city of Lima.
He reiterated that they (the National Police and Armed Forces) will prioritize the safety of both protesters and those who do not participate in the protests, and asked them to keep calm and quiet.
Meanwhile, the minister reminded people who will participate in the protests should comply with the law and the security measures that are being adopted.
“We do not want more deaths. We do not want more injuries. Enough of blood. Enough of plunging Peruvian families into mourning. Let’s start working, we want a change in Peru,” Romero told the press after participating in a new session of the Council of Ministers.
Likewise, the head of the Interior sector stated that his main concern upon taking office has been mainly about the lives and physical integrity of all Peruvians.
Furthermore, the Cabinet member called on all authorities to come together in peace.
“Our National Police and Armed Forces are always attentive to defend democracy and the lives of all Peruvians. So we can start a new life in Peru, let’s support each other,” Romero remarked.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi has reiterated Peru’s commitment to the international human rights system during her visit to DAVOS, Switzerland, where she leads the Peruvian delegation that participates in the World Economic Forum.
The minister stressed that, given the political crisis and protests in the country, the Government invited the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to visit Peru, as a way of offering evidence of its openness.
Likewise, a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will arrive in the country on January 18, at the invitation of the Peruvian Government.
“Similarly, in order to resolve this crisis, the Government of Peru has urged Congress to confirm the advancement of general elections, which was already announced and proposed by President Dina Boluarte, so that her government becomes a government of democratic transition,” Gervasi stated.
The government official highlighted that various State ministers are traveling to different parts of the country to set up roundtables, especially in the Andean and southern areas of Peru, with the aim of “achieving a comprehensive handling of this crisis.“
Gervasi also indicated that the Public Ministry and the Judicial Branch have opened investigations to identify and punish those responsible for the acts of violence during the protests.
Moreover —she said— Congress has created a multi-party commission to determine responsibilities for human rights violations in said context. — NNN-ANDINA
