Peru unrest: Cusco International Airport resumes operations after two days suspension

CUSCO (Peru), Jan 15 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in city of Cusco resumed operations on Saturday morning, after two days of suspension due to social protests, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) has reported.

Via its official Twitter account, the MTC announced that it has coordinated with law enforcement to guarantee the integrity of passengers and members of the aviation community, as well as to safeguard airport operations.

The Cusco airport suspended its operations on Jan 12 as a security measure in the face of protests held in the Southern Andean metropolis.

As is known, on Jan 11, protests intensified in the city of Cusco. Groups of protesters even attempted to take over the Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport, where a strong presence of the National Police of Peru was registered.

Protests erupted across Peru since early December after the removal of former President Pedro Castillo, who was thrown out of office for attempting to dissolve Congress and rule by decree in a failed bid to prevent an impeachment vote against him.

Clashes between protesters and security forces have left at least 42 people dead, including a police officer who was burned alive in a vehicle, while hundreds more have been injured. — NNN-ANDINA
