Algeria Constitution Council head resigns amid protests

ALGIERS, April 17 (NNN- Xinhua) — President of the Algerian Constitutional Council Tayeb Belaiz resigned on Tuesday amid mass protests in the country demanding for his departure.

“Belaiz notified the members of the Constitutional Council, during a meeting held Tuesday, that he presented his resignation to the interim president Abdelkader Bensalah,” the council said in a statement.

The main mission of the council is ensuring that the process of polls, including referendum, election of the president, as well as local and parliamentary elections, is in line with the law.

Algeria has been experiencing for two months a political crisis caused by mass protests, which led to the resignation of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on April 2.

Last Tuesday, Algeria’s parliament named Bensalah, chairman of its upper house, as interim president following Bouteflika’s resignation.

On April 10, Bensalah announced that the presidential election was scheduled to be held on July 4. But the protesters continued their demonstration in the capital Algiers, demanding for the ousting of Bensalah’s government.
