COTONOU, Jan 12 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Progressive Union for Renewal (UP-R) garnered 928,947 votes in the legislative elections held Sunday and won 53 seats of the 109-member assembly, according to the provisional results announced Wednesday by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin.
The announcement said that the UP-R, which allied with President Patrice Talon, acquired 37.56 percent of the total votes, and the Republican Bloc (BR) came in second place with 29.17 percent, winning 28 seats, while the radical opposition Democrats garnered 24.02 percent of the votes, also winning 28 seats.
According to early poll results, out of the 6,600,572 registered voters, only 2,551,547 people cast their ballots, a turnout of 38.66 percent. — NNN-XINHUA
