RAMALLAH/GAZA, Jan 7 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine yesterday warned against any Israeli measures that would be taken against Palestinian prisoners, after Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir visited a prison in southern Israel.
Qadri Abu Baker, chairman of the Palestinian Detainees and Ex-detainees Affairs Commission, said, “the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons are determined to confront Israeli measures by rebelling against the prisons’ laws and by going on a hunger strike.”
Abu Baker added that, “the Palestinian leadership is making great efforts with all parties and international institutions to protect the prisoners.”
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club Association said in a press statement that, the prisoners are ready for an upcoming confrontation against the measures that the Israeli government intends to impose.
In Gaza, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said in a press statement, “what the Israeli government is planning is a dangerous escalation that cannot be silenced, and the Palestinian people will not let it go unnoticed.”
Yesterday, Ben-Gvir tweeted that he is proceeding with his plan to adopt a law that imposes the death penalty on prisoners accused of killing or attempting to kill Israelis.
“I visited Nafha prison after the construction of new cells, to make sure that those who killed Jews would not get better conditions than the existing ones,” he said, adding that, his visit aims to “stop the policy that existed until today and issue a death penalty law.”
Israel detains about 4,700 Palestinians in 23 prisons, including dozens who have spent more than 20 years, 34 female prisoners, 150 children, and 830 administrative detainees, according to official Palestinian statistics.– NNN-WAFA
