TRIPOLI, Jan 6 (NNN-Xinhua) — The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) urged the Libyan House of Representatives (parliament) and the High Council of State to reach complete, final and time-bound arrangements for elections in the country.
The two sides on Thursday announced in a joint statement that they agreed to work on a clear roadmap to finalize necessary procedures for elections, including election laws.
“UNSMIL takes note of the joint statement of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the High Council of State regarding their discussions in Cairo today,” the UNSMIL said in a statement.
It strongly encouraged the two rivaling chambers to “swiftly reach a complete and final agreement including on the contentious issues to finalize the steps required to take the country to inclusive national elections within a specific timeframe.”
The UNSMIL expressed readiness to support genuine initiatives aimed at achieving a national consensus toward a Libyan-Libyan solution to the protracted political crisis in Libya.
Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled due to disagreements over election laws among the parties. Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Monday said that his government is ready to hold general elections in the year 2023. — NNN-XINHUA
