Sierra Leone Makes Move To Curb Drug Abuse, Trafficking

FREETOWN, Dec 25 (NNN-IRIN) – Sierra Leone, yesterday, destroyed large quantities of prohibited drugs, in a bid to fight the prevalence of drug abuse and trafficking in the country.

Sierra Leone police, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, destroyed the drugs in the public view of stakeholders.

The police media unit said that, the drugs destroyed included 135 kg of cannabis sativa, and over 2,000 boxes of Tramadol capsules, declaring that, the move was meant to serve as a deterrent to importers and dealers of these dangerous drugs and substances in the country.

The customs and port officials said, most of the Tramadol was intercepted at the Sierra Leone Port.

Ibrahim Sesay, a medical doctor in Sierra Leone, said that, some of the Tramadol have been imported to serve the wrong purpose, such as, selling it out to young people, for illegal consumption.– NNN-IRIN
