LIMA, Dec 23 (NNN-ANDINA) — Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi stressed that the rule of law prevails in Peru and international obligations are met, referring to the decision to give a safe-conduct to ex-First Lady Lilia Paredes, who has been granted asylum in Mexico.
The government official remarked that the wife of ex-President Pedro Castillo and their two minor children have arrived in said country under the protection of diplomatic asylum provided by the Government of Mexico, according to the Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum of 1954, of which Peru is also part.
Gervasi indicated that, in view of Mexico’s decision to grant Paredes asylum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a careful and legal analysis and requested the opinion of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights to grant the safe-conduct that allowed Lilia Paredes and her children to leave the country.
Moreover, the minister pointed out that the Mexican Government was informed that the ex-First Lady is included in a pre-trial investigation as a co-author of the crime of criminal organization, and for this reason, the judicial file was provided along with the safe-conduct, so that Mexico is aware of her situation.
“Peru rigorously complies with its international obligations, so it demands that other countries abide by the principles of international law, such as non-intervention, in the same way,” she told RPP.
On the other hand, the Cabinet member stated that Mexico’s position regarding the Government of President Dina Boluarte should not affect the handing over of the Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance from that country to Peru, which shall be assumed as of January 2023.
“Peru will assume the (Pro-Tempore) Presidency as provided by the rules of the integration mechanism (the Pacific Alliance), which do not belong to a particular country,” she added.
In addition, Gervasi highlighted the fact that most countries have expressed explicit recognition of Dina Boluarte as constitutional President of the Republic of Peru.
In this regard, she referred to Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Suriname, Canada, and the United States, as well as all Member States of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Korea, Japan and Israel, among others. — NNN-ANDINA
