NEW DELHI, Dec 9 (NNN-PTI) – India’s main ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), retained the western state of Gujarat, in the state-level elections yesterday.
The main opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), wrested the northern hilly state of Himachal Pradesh, from the BJP.
Election results were announced yesterday for both states.
In Gujarat, the BJP won in a record 156 assembly constituencies, out of the total 182, while the INC managed to win merely 17.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), made its electoral debut in Gujarat, by winning in five assembly constituencies, while the remaining four constituencies were won by others.
This is seen as the biggest victory for the BJP in Gujarat state, which has been the party’s stronghold for nearly three decades. Gujarat is the home state of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who served as its chief minister, before becoming the country’s PM in 2014.
The BJP has been ruling the Gujarat state for over 27 years.
In Himachal Pradesh, the INC won in 40 assembly constituencies out of the total 68, while the BJP could win in only 25 constituencies, and the other three won by independent candidates.
The BJP is currently the ruling party in Himachal Pradesh, but after yesterday’s election results, the INC will form the next government.– NNN-PTI
