LIMA, Dec 8 (NNN-ANDINA) — Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra was on Wednesday afternoon officially named President of the Republic of Peru for the remainder of the 2021-2026 term.

She replaces ex-President Jose Pedro Castillo Terrones, who earlier was constitutionally impeached and removed from office by Parliament.

It should be noted that Boluarte previously served as the Vice-President of the Republic of Peru.

She is the first woman to become President of the Republic of Peru.

Held at Congress headquarters in Lima, the inauguration ceremony was led by Congress Chairman Jose Williams Zapata. The event is attended by dignitaries from State powers.

Boluarte received Constitutional Court (TC) members at the Government Palace in Lima on Wednesday afternoon.

TC Chairman Francisco Morales Saravia, accompanied by the other Court members, met with the Head of State at the Executive Branch headquarters.

Boluarte thanked them for their visit and stated that she assumes the task humbly and respecting the Nation.

Likewise, the Head of State reiterated her call to work in unity, as she indicated in her first Address to the Nation after being sworn in.

“By fighting one another, the ones who end up losing are our children,” she remarked.

The top official affirmed that she will fulfill the task with the aim of continuing to narrow the poverty gap, seeking the development of this country.

“I think that is the vision of any authority that is in command of the Nation. Perhaps it will not be so easy to achieve everything in this remaining time in office, but starting today my work and that of the team to join me must share that vision,” she told Constitutional Court members.

Furthermore, Boluarte called on the elected regional and local authorities to work honestly and transparently, pointing out that the country is already fed up with corruption.

“Yes, we can work in that transparent and honest vision, with ordinary citizens, with the sisters and brothers of deep Peru, but also of our beloved capital and with all Peruvians,” she underlined.

Meanwhile, Castillo, who was impeached and removed from office earlier Wednesday, remains detained at the Lima Prefecture headquarters located in Downtown Lima.

Attorney General Patricia Benavides and Prosecutor Marita Barreto, who is the Coordinator of the Special Team of Prosecutors against Corruption of Power, arrived at the scene.

The ex-Head of State was arrested when he was being transported inside a vehicle on Wilson Avenue, in Downtown Lima, after leaving the Government Palace building.
