LIMA, Dec 7 (NNN-ANDINA) — Municipalities across the country will limit access to beaches littered with dead and sick birds due to avian influenza, in order to prevent the spread of the disease to the detriment of human health.

The information was confirmed by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) after a meeting with authorities from the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) and National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor) of the Ministry of Agriculture (Midagri).

At the meeting, participants agreed to recommend that district municipalities restrict access to beaches where the presence of dead or sick birds with bird flu has been reported.

According to Minsa, local governments, within the framework of their powers, will limit access to beaches at specific times, in order to clean these areas and prevent the spread of the disease to the detriment of human health.

SENASA and Serfor will be in charge of the protocol and procedure for the collection and disposal of dead birds, as well as their correct implementation, providing personal protective equipment for the personnel.

Since November, the presence of dead or sick birds due to bird flu has been reported on beaches in all regions along the Peruvian coast, mainly between Tumbes and Moquegua.

Tacna has been the only region that has not reported cases to date.

Faced with this situation, SENASA declared a health emergency throughout the country in response to the detection of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in wild birds in order to prevent this disease from spreading to backyard (poultry) birds and commercial farms. — NNN-ANDINA
