Cuban president celebrates Latin American Medicine Day

HAVANA, Dec 4 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated Cuban health workers on the occasion of Latin American Medicine Day.

On his Twitter account, the president, who began a tour of Caribbean nations Saturday, highlighted the nobility of this profession and said, “the world already knows and admires them. It will recognize and reward them one day.”

In another tweet, the head of State congratulated the workers of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero congratulated on Twitter “the army of white coats, who with their daily work fulfill the noble task of saving lives.”

Every Dec 3 marks Latin American Medicine Day to honor the birthday of Cuban scientist Dr. Carlos J. Finlay.

Finlay discovered and described the importance of the biological vector through the metaxenic theory of disease transmission by biological agents, applying it to yellow fever transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

Cuba celebrates Latin American Medicine Day on Saturday with successes in the fight against Covid-19 in its immunization campaign with homegrown vaccines and shows solidarity with other peoples.

The country’s top leaders described the work done by doctors, nurses, laboratorians, and technicians from all the nation’s healthcare centers during the complex scenario of the pandemic as extraordinary.

One of the great successes, with the invaluable scientific contribution, is the vaccination campaign, in which more than 42,540,700 doses have already been administered to the population.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), the incidence rate of the disease has significantly decreased in all provinces, as well as the number of seriously ill and critical patients, pediatric cases, and deaths.

This favorable epidemiological result is the result of the development and production of the Cuban Soberana 02, Soberana Plus, and Abdala (CIGB-66) vaccines.

According to MINSAP, 90.3 percent of the Cuban population is fully immunized, while more than 8,655,035 people have received booster doses.

Data from the National Statistics and Information Office indicates that at the end of March 2022, the Cuban population totaled 11,105,814 inhabitants.

The Caribbean nation also celebrates Latin American Medicine Day by providing healthcare assistance to the Mexican people and the most vulnerable sectors. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
