BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Dec 1 (NNN-ANN) – Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand will jointly nominate kebaya, for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List, of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, local media reported, yesterday.
Kebaya is a traditional form of women’s dress in the region, which became highly fashionable at the turn of the 20th century, and continues to be worn today.
It is, in essence, a long-sleeved open-fronted upper garment, traditionally made from a variety of fabrics and often known for being adorned with intricate embroidery.
The four countries agreed to work together on this nomination, as kebaya represents and celebrates the region’s shared history and promotes cross-cultural understanding.
The four countries welcome other nations to join the nomination, which will be submitted in Mar, 2023, and the result is expected to be announced at the end of 2024.– NNN-ANN
