TOKYO, Nov 26 (NNN-NHK) – Consumer prices in Tokyo rose 3.6 percent this month, from a year earlier, marking the steepest increase in 40 years, government data showed, yesterday.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Tokyo’s core consumer price index in Nov, which excludes volatile fresh food items, hit its highest level since the 4.2 percent logged in Apr, 1982, amid soaring food and energy costs and the yen’s sharp depreciation.
The latest figure exceeded the Bank of Japan’s two percent target, for the sixth straight month, signalling broadening inflationary pressure.
The inflation data for Tokyo is considered to be a leading indicator of nationwide trends. The Nov figures for all of Japan are scheduled to be released next month.– NNN-NHK
