Tanzania seizes over 11,000 kg of illicit drugs in 10 months; 2,408 drug traffickers arrested

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 18 (NNN-NEWVISION) — Tanzania’s anti-narcotics watchdog said at least 11,974.4 kg of illicit drugs were seized in the country between January and October this year.

Gerald Kusaya, the commissioner general for the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), said 2,408 suspected drug traffickers were arrested during the period under review.

Kusaya told a meeting of stakeholders in the fight against drug trafficking held in the east African nation’s southern highlands region of Songwe that 21 hectares of cannabis were also destroyed in special crackdowns conducted by anti-narcotics officials in collaboration with other security agencies during the past 10 months.

He said the seized drugs included heroin, cocaine and cannabis, mentioning Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Coast regions as leaders in the drug trafficking scam.

Songwe regional commissioner, Waziri Kindamba, praised the DCEA and other security agencies for their determination in fighting the social evil. — NNN-NEWVISION
