Update: Cuban and Algerian Presidents agreed to boost bilateral cooperation

ALGIERS, Nov 18 (NNN-ACN) — Algeria’s Abdelmajid Tebboune and Cuba’s Miguel Diaz-Canel announced on Thursday the results of their meeting in which they agreed to boost economic, commercial, financial and cooperation links.

In statements to reporters after the meeting at Algeria’s Presidential Palace, Tebboune said that he decided to cancel the Cuban debt services and put off its reimbursement.

The Algerian head of state said that his country will provide Cuba with a solar power plant; he also addressed accords to supply fuels to the island and his interest in cooperation in the production of drugs and vaccines.

Tebboune said that he promised his Cuban counterpart the holding of a joint commission in Havana next year, in which some 150 Algerian investors will consider business opportunities in Cuba.

Both leaders considered areas for promising bilateral cooperation, such as healthcare, energy, renewables, pharmaceuticals, culture and education, said Diaz-Canel.

The Cuban leader noted that the meeting also considered cooperation in sugar production and the renegotiation or restructuring of the Cuban debt with Algeria.

Diaz-Canel started his official visit to Algeria by placing a wreath to the monument of the Martyrs of Algiers; later he held official talks with the Algerian president and with the country’s defense minister.
