European Parliament holds forum against US Cuba blockade

HAVANA, Nov 17 (NNN-ACN) — The European Parliament is holding a forum on the effects of the US blockade of Cuba, attended by two deputies of the Island’s legislature, namely Félix Martínez Suárez, president of the Economic Commission, and Enrique Alemán Gutiérrez, who is also an academic and religious scholar.

Two panels will address the tightening of the blockade and its impact on the Cuban population, the extraterritorial effects of this policy after the reenactment by Donald Trump of Titles III and IV of the Helms Burton Act, and the actions of the European Union to counteract them.

The international community recently voted in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) against the said US Cuba policy, with 185 votes in favor of the end of the blockade. There were two votes against (United States and Israel) and two abstentions (Brazil and Ukraine).

Cuba has denounced that the US government keeps ignoring this result and has even reinforced the blockade deliberately in an attempt to stifle the country.

On Nov 3, while addressing the UNGA, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla described this policy as an act of genocide and a policy of war to bring the Cuban economy to a standstill and create a situation of ungovernability in the country.

Separately, the secretary of the Cuban Parliament Homero Acosta referred to his working agenda in Spain including his meetings with members of the Spanish Senate and the Deputies’ Congress.

In his Twitter account, Acosta wrote that his delegation met with Pau Mari-Klose and with Anton Gomez Reino, president and vice-president respectfully of the Foreign Affairs Commission of Spains Deputies’ Congress.

“We briefed them about our legislative activity and our position regarding issues of interest for the two sides,” wrote the Cuban Parliament secretary, about the meeting which was also attended by Cuban ambassador to Spain Marcelino Medina.

Acosta also wrote about his meeting with the general secretary of Spain’s Senate Manuel Cavero. He said they addressed prospects for cooperation in different areas.

The Cuban delegation also met with the workers at the island’s embassy in Havana about the legislative work and other issues of national interest. — NNN-ACN
