KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (NNN-Bernama) — Azerbaijan supports the power of diplomacy and peaceful settlement of its issues with Armenia, said Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Malaysia Irfan Davudov.
In this context, he said in March 2022, Azerbaijan declared a proposal on the basic principles for the establishment of relations between Baku and Yerevan.
Davudov explained that the first principle of this proposal calls on both sides to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of internationally recognised borders and political independence of each other.
“We cannot imagine any clearer position than that. It proves that Azerbaijan demonstrates a very sincere, principled and firm stand in the peace talks,” he said in a statement on the latest development of peace talks between the two countries to solve pending issues.
The ambassador also pointed out that on the other hand, Azerbaijan has launched large-scale rehabilitation and reconstruction works in the liberated territories during the post-conflict period.
“At the same time, Azerbaijan’s peaceful and cooperative efforts extend beyond its borders. For example, the Zangezur Corridor, which is expected to be constructed within the clauses of the Trilateral Declaration dated Nov 10, 2020 among Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia, will not only establish connectivity between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but it will also significantly support connectivity between Asia and Europe as the Middle Corridor,” he further said.
In 1992, war broke out between the two former Soviet states, resulting in Armenian occupation of 20 per cent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognised territory.
The Second Karabakh War erupted on Sept 27, 2020, resulted in Azerbaijan liberating most of its occupied territories. The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement (Trilateral Declaration) on Nov 10, 2020, to end the fighting and work towards the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement.
Since then, there have been some clashes with both sides trading accusations about this. And since the 2020 war, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had met several times for peace talks.
Davudov said despite some positive developments on peace, there are some issues procrastinating the situation which he described could harm the normalisation process, including the issue of landmines in Azerbaijan territories which have resulted in casualties.
Internationally, Davudov said Azerbaijan is also quite proud of its successful accomplishment with international partners to advance global security, collaboration and prosperity.
“We just celebrated the third anniversary of our chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which must be read as one of the significant turning points in our story of international cooperation. Azerbaijan has chaired the NAM during a challenging time, working closely with members like Malaysia to boost the organisation’s role on the world stage and advance international peace and cooperation,” he pointed out.
