KHARTOUM (Sudan), April 11 (NNN) — The armed forces of Sudan finally made an announcement Thursday, saying Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has been arrested and that the military will power a transitional authority for two years.

The announcement made by Defence Minister Awad Ibnouf, was aired live by state television.

Ibnouf said the regime of Omar al-Bashir had been toppled and that its chief had been “detained in a secure place.”

He said an emergency had been also declared for three months in the country.

Earlier, it was reported by local media that Bashir was under house arrest and his bodyguards had been detained.

The Sudanese military intelligence was also reported to have rounded up more than 100 executives of the ruling National Congress Party.

Reports also said that flights at Sudan’s Khartoum International Airport have been suspended while only landings on airport are being allowed.

Hundreds of Sudanese protesters had staged a sit-in outside army headquarters in the capital from Saturday before the military take-over.

Since Saturday, at least 22 people were also reported to have been killed in clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Al-Bashir had ruled Sudan since 1989.
