Sri Lankan President To Establish New Safari Park

COLOMBO, Nov 4 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lankan President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, yesterday, instructed the environment minister, to find land suitable to establish a 1,000-acre safari park, in the Northern Province.

The president said, during a meeting that, there are several animal species with a surplus population in Sri Lanka’s zoos, some of which can be relocated to the new safari park.

He said, there are large herds of deer in some suburbs of Colombo, which can also be relocated.

A suitable land will be selected soon and the secretary to the Ministry of Environment has been placed in charge.

Sri Lanka has several national parks that offer safaris. However, Ridiyagama is the only dedicated safari park, which covers 500 acres and is situated in Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka.– NNN-XINHUA
