Peru: Over 21,000 coca hectares eradicated so far in 2022

LIMA, Nov 2 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Ministry of Interior (Mininter) has eradicated more than 21,000 hectares of illegal coca plantations in the valleys of five Peruvian regions during the current year, thus preventing these crops from being used in the potential production of cocaine hydrochloride.

The reduction of this considerable space was possible thanks to the operations carried out by Mininter’s Special Project for Control and Reduction of Illegal Crops in Alto Huallaga (Corah) —with the support of the National Police of Peru (PNP).

According to the latest Corah report, the actions were carried out in the valleys belonging to 10 provinces in five regions: Huanuco, Ucayali, Puno, San Martin, and Junin, where 20 cocaine production laboratories were also destroyed.

The operations included the axes of Aguaytia (Huanuco-Ucayali), San Gaban (Puno), Tingo Maria (Huanuco), Calleria (Ucayali), Santa Lucia (San Martin), Mazamari (Junin), Alto Anapati (Junin), and Ciudad Constitution (Huanuco).

In Aguaytia’s operational axes, Corah and PNP agents managed to eradicate the largest number of illegal seedlings —with a total of 5,675.88 hectares (ha), followed by San Gaban (3,758.84 ha), Tingo Maria (2,902.59 ha), and Calleria (3,574.66 ha).

According to projections by Mininter, 21,600 hectares of illicit coca seedlings are expected to be eradicated by end-2022 thanks to actions by Corah and the police institution.

This year, Corah activities started on Feb 1, August the month of highest productivity, having eradicated 3,625.33 hectares, followed by July (2,965.71 ha), June (2,313.53 ha), May (2,518.41 ha), and March (2,280.94 ha). — NNN-ANDINA
