SANTIAGO, Oct 30 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Investigative Police (PDI) of Chile reported that so far 753 homicides were registered in the national territory, 33.5 percent more compared to the same period of 2021.
According to the report, most of the cases occurred in the north of the country, in the regions of Arica-Parinacota, Tarapaca, Antofagasta and Atacama.
In the latter, crimes increased by 112 percentage.
Alexis Rogat, regional prosecutor of Atacama, told La Tercera newspaper that the main causes of the high number of deaths are alcohol and drug consumption, fights and quarrels.
The official referred with concern to the increasing use of firearms in these incidents, including handmade weapons.
The situation is also complex in the southern region of Biobio, where 87 people died violently, 74 percent more than the previous year. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
