Peru: New Health Minister sworn in

LIMA, Oct 29 (NNN-ANDINA) — President Pedro Castillo administered the oath of office to Kelly Portalatino Avalos, who has become the new Minister of Health.

Portalatino Avalos is a medical surgeon graduated from Universidad San Pedro in Ancash region and replaces Jorge Lopez Peña in the position.

Lopez Peña had been sworn in as Minister on April 7, 2022Last Sunday, the Head of State announced the termination of his appointment as sector’s head.

For her part, Portalatino Avalos was elected Congresswoman of the Republic for the 2021-2016 period representing Peru Libre (Free Peru) party.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Meanwhile, the Peruvian Government repealed the national state of emergency established due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had imposed said measure since 2020.

This decision comes due to the evolution of the pandemic, the progress of vaccination, and the decrease in cases, according to Supreme Decree No. 130-2022-PCM published in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

The Executive Branch supports the repeal of the state of emergency because of the progress of COVID-19 vaccination, as well as the decrease in the number of cases and patients hospitalized at ICUs due to this disease. It also points out that there is a decrease in the number of deaths caused by said virus.

The number of citizens infected with COVID-19 rose to 4,153,919 and the death toll stood at 216,909 in Peru as of Oct 26 at 10:00 p.m. (local time), the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has reported.

Within this framework, 200 cases were detected and 4 people passed away due to the virus on the analyzed day. — NNN-ANDINA
