Covid-19: Cuban success against virus is an example for the world – 4th International Health Convention

HAVANA, Oct 20 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Cuban success in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes Covid-19, with homegrown vaccines is an example for the world, a delegate to the 4th International Health Convention said.

In these two years, Cuba has made remarkable progress in the field of vaccines and in the strategy to fight the pandemic, Dr. Lauro Medrano, a participant from the United States in the event that is being held until Friday at the Havana International Conference Center, said.

It has been an uphill battle, but they have achieved it and is an example for the whole world, Medrano said.

At the convention, attended by some 2,000 delegates from over 60 nations, several speakers highlighted Cuba´s achievements in the fight against Covid-19, taking as main reference the campaign with vaccines created and developed by Cuban scientists.

They pointed out that Cuba produced five vaccine candidates in record time, and three of them (Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala) were authorized for emergency use.

They also highlighted how Cuba leads the world list of anti-Covid-19 doses administered to its population. It was the first country on the planet to immunize children over two years of age, and the vaccines are used in other nations.

Cuba has a Covid-19 lethality rate of 0.77 percent compared to 1.04 in the world and 1.59 in the Americas, and no patient has died from the disease in the country for over a month.

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday reported three Covid-19 cases in the past few hours and no deaths from this pandemic.

All 15 active cases in the country have a stable clinical evolution, so there are no serious or critical patients in intensive care units.

The total number of recovered patients rose to 1,102,659, and since the outbreak of the pandemic, in March 2020, 1,111,263 cases have been reported.

Including today’s official report, the death toll remains at 8,530. This favorable epidemiological situation is the result of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19, since Cuba has administered 42,221,794 doses with homegrown Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala vaccines.

Some 9,995,815 people have been fully vaccinated, that is, 90.2 percent of the Cuban population, whereas 8,611,893 have received booster shots.

According to data from the National Statistics and Information Office, at the end of March this year, Cuba had a population of 11,105,814 inhabitants. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
