BOGOTA, Oct 18 (NNN-Xinhua) — At least one child was killed and five adults were injured when a small plane went off the runway and crashed in the area where some street vendors were stationed outside the “Simón Bolívar” airport in Santa Marta.
The accident occurred around 11 am local time when the small plane went off the runway at Simon Bolivar International Airport in the city of Santa Marta, Magdalena department.
A three-year-old boy who was not on the aircraft was killed and another was seriously injured by the plane as it crashed through the airport fence and hit a tree, the commander of the Santa Marta Metropolitan Police, Colonel Adriana Paz, told local media.
“We also have five people who were (injured while) being moved or transported by the plane,” she said.
The aircraft, a Cirrus SF50 with 7 people on board, was taking off for Bogotà but the maneuver was unsuccessful due to causes that are under investigation.
The Santa Marta Police confirmed that the plane, owned by the private company Panamerican Training Center-PTC, overwhelmed the stalls of the children who sold their products outside the airport, while the two crew members and the five passengers sustained minor injuries. — NNN-XINHUA
