Indian Police Foiled Smuggling Bid In Mizoram Rescuing 140 Exotic Birds, Animals

NEW DELHI, Oct 16 (NNN-PTI) – Police in India’s north-eastern state of Mizoram, yesterday, foiled a massive smuggling bid and rescued 140 exotic birds and animals, officials said.

The bid to smuggle wildlife animals and birds was foiled by intercepting three vehicles in Champhai district, about 188 km east of Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram.

“Acting jointly with Champhai excise and narcotics department, early this morning (yesterday), police seized and rescued 140 exotic animals and birds, suspected to be smuggled from Myanmar,” a statement issued by the police said.

The vehicles have been seized and three persons have been arrested in this regard.

According to police, the rescued animals and birds include 30 tortoises, two monkeys, two Marmoset monkeys, 22 pythons, 18 Sumatran water monitors, 55 crocodiles (hatchlings), four Flame power birds and one Albino wallaby.

“The said exotic animals and birds, along with the vehicles, were handed over to the superintendent, custom preventive force, Champhai, for further legal action,” the statement said.– NNN-PTI
