ABUJA, Oct 15 (NNN-Xinhua) — Nigeria will resume train services between the capital city Abuja and the northern city Kaduna after security measures were installed, Minister of Transportation Mu’azu Sambo said.
The train service was suspended after a passenger train en route to Kaduna from Abuja was attacked by gunmen in Rijana, a town in Kaduna on March 28, resulting in the deaths of at least eight passengers, injuries of 26 others and the abduction of over 60 people.
The security measures will include short and long-term plans, with the short-term plans taking effect from November, said the minister in a statement issued in Abuja.
“We are looking at how the rail lines can be safe by putting in 24-hour surveillance and immediate response apparatus,” Sambo said.
According to the Nigerian government, a total of 362 passengers and 20 train crew members were on board the train at the time of the attack.
On March 29, one day after the incident of the attack, the Nigerian Railway Corporation indefinitely suspended its train operations between Abuja and Kaduna. — NNN-XINHUA
