Four Dead, Three Missing As Fishing Vessel Capsized In Bangladesh

DHAKA, Oct 14 (NNN-BSS) – At least four bodies were recovered yesterday, after a fishing vessel capsized in the Karnaphuli river in Chattogram, some 242 km south-east of the capital, Dhaka.

Ekram Ullah, officer-in-charge of Chattogram’s Sadarghat River Police Station, told journalists that, members of the River Police and the Coast Guard, recovered the bodies from different places in the river, in separate rescue operations, in collaboration with local people, yesterday.

He said, three people, including two crew members, remain missing. A search operation is underway for the people still missing, he added.

The police said, rescuers had been working against a strong current and choppy waters.

According to the official, the fishing vessel, FV Magferat, carrying 21 persons, including 15 crew members, was being towed to the Sea Resources Dockyard, at the Ichhanagar area, on the southern bank of the Karnaphuli river, for revamp early Wednesday, but its propeller reportedly broke and it veered out of control and smashed into other fishing boats and buoys near the jetty, before capsizing, leaving seven people on board missing.– NNN-BSS
