HAVANA, Oct 14 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez thanked the United Nations for its strong support to Cuban families affected after the passage of Hurricane Ian across western region of Cuba.
“On behalf of the Cuban people and government, we thank the valuable support of the United Nations System to our recovery from Hurricane Ian. Its contribution will allow us to benefit many affected families,” Bruno Rodríguez posted on Twitter.
On Wednesday, the UN submitted a $42 million plan to support Cuba, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s website.
UN´s spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said this initiative should benefit nearly 800,000 inhabitants and includes $3.7 million reallocated from UN team´s financing, as well as an additional $7.8 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund.
The multilateral agency praised this new plan supports immediate response efforts and long-term recovery needs in different sectors such as housing, health, education, food security, and access to clean water and electricity.
Meanwhile, Cuban authorities thanked a financial donation sent by the Government of China to help fix the damages caused by Hurricane Ian.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Deborah Rivas, conveyed Cuba’s gratitude for the Chinese aid, which will contribute to the recovery efforts in western Cuba.
On his end, China’s ambassador to Cuba, Ma Hui, highlighted the unbreakable friendship between the two countries and their firm willingness to provide mutual support in difficult moments.
On Sept 27, category three Hurricane Ian made landfall in the Cuban province of Pinar del Río and affected almost half of the houses in the region. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
