CARACAS, Oct 13 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has sent a shipment of medicines and medical supplies to people affected by landslides in the north-central region of Venezuela, the organization said on Wednesday.
The medicines will cover 5,000 people in the town of Las Tejerias in Aragua state, according to a PAHO press release.
“In this way, the urgent needs of people with diabetes and high blood pressure, and those suffering from skin and lung diseases can be met,” the press release said.
PAHO, which is part of the World Health Organization, also provided 10,000 water purification tablets.
On Sunday, one day after the mudslides, the organization said its representatives accompanied Venezuelan authorities to Las Tejerias and noted the disruption in the supply of electricity and drinking water.
PAHO added that it will work to determine “the gaps that have arisen in terms of sanitation, hygiene and waste disposal” in the affected area.
According to the most recent report by Venezuelan authorities, the landslides in Las Tejerias caused the death of at least 43 people, while over 50 people were still missing and 440 houses were swept away by floods. — NNN-XINHUA
