LIMA, Oct 12 (NNN-ANDINA) — The first batch of the vaccine against monkeypox, consisting of 5,600 doses of this antigen, will arrive in Peru on Oct 19, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, Minsa specified that this first batch is part of the 9,800 doses of the vaccine against the monkeypox virus acquired by Peru.

The second batch, consisting of 4,200 doses, is scheduled for Nov 16.

It has been determined that this important batch of vaccines will be administered, in a first stage, to previously-identified vulnerable populations that are at greater risk of developing serious disease.

Minsa explained that they are Jynneos vaccines from the Danish laboratory Bavarian Nordic. These vaccines have been proven to be safe and effective.

The government agency indicated that the arrival of these doses responds to coordination carried out by the Peruvian Government and the Revolving Fund of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Minsa reported that the number of confirmed monkeypox cases in Peru has risen to 2,768.

In a tweet, Minsa stated that cases were reported in Metropolitan Lima (2,143), Lima Provinces (34), Callao (189), La Libertad (132), Arequipa (112), Piura (26), Lambayeque (24), Ucayali (19), Ica (16), San Martin (14), Cusco (13), Loreto (11), Tacna (10), Ancash (6), Madre de Dios (6), Junin (5), Huanuco (3), Cajamarca (2), Moquegua (2), and Puno (1).

Minsa reported 2,350 hospital discharges. Besides, all patients received medical care and are being monitored, as contacts are identified.

Thus, the population is recommended to maintain preventive measures such as avoiding close physical contact, including sexual contact, with people who have rashes or blisters that may be suspicious for monkeypox.
Also, people should avoid skin-to-skin or sexual contact in places with a high flow of people such as discos or saunas. — NNN-ANDINA
