Cuba seeks to increase sugarcane yields

HAVANA, Oct 9 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Sugarcane Research Institute (INICA) is carrying out 28 projects to contribute with its scientific and technical potential to the sustainable development of agricultural production in this sector, an official source said.

INICA General Director Sergio Guillen told Prensa Latina that these highly competitive research and technological innovation programs are financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA).

At present we are setting up three sectoral projects, which have to do with agroecology, precision agriculture, and agricultural extension, due to the need to continue sugarcane production in the country, he said.

The specialist explained that the main purpose of the center is to obtain and commercialize varieties of this crop, seeds, vitroplants, scientific-technical services, associated technologies, biological resources, and laboratory services that contribute to the development of sugarcane agriculture.

The INICA, founded in 1964, operates in eight lines of work, aimed at plant breeding, biotechnological development and genetic improvement, nutrition and soil conservation, agronomic management, phytosanitary protection and mitigation and climate change.

It also focuses on precision agriculture development, water management and economics, and agricultural technology. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
