LIMA, Oct 9 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa underscored that the 52nd Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly – held in Lima on Oct 5-7 – has been a resounding success.
After closing the assembly on Friday night, he highlighted during a press conference the presence of 21 Foreign Affairs ministers and representatives of 37 Observer States, businesspeople, and civil society representatives in an event that was held in person after two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Peruvian government official pointed out that this convening power reaffirms the trust of citizens in said organization as the region’s main forum for political dialogue and search for joint solutions to shared challenges.
Landa said that this event allowed participants to address in depth the most pressing problems faced by our societies —one of them being the topic that Peru had proposed as the central theme of this assembly: “Together against Inequality and Discrimination.”
“That is why, at this General Assembly, we have identified the most pressing concerns in the international context, as well as agreed on regional and national commitments to face them, which have been reflected in the Declaration of Lima, Together for Equality and Non-Discrimination,” he indicated.
The high-ranking official pointed out that this assembly has granted Peru the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with high authorities from various countries around the world, who had participated in this event, as well as various international organizations, thus serving to promote Peru’s interests in both the bilateral and multilateral spheres.
“Within the framework of the assembly, more than 20 topics of regional interest were discussed. In addition, 14 resolutions and 4 declarations of continental relevance were approved,” he noted.
In this regard, Minister Landa highlighted the decisions adopted on the situations in Nicaragua and Haiti, women’s leadership, democracy in the Americas, among others.
Moreover, the official mentioned the bilateral meeting held with United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. They agreed to underscore the strategic nature of the bilateral relationship, as well as cooperation in education, health, and the fight against drug trafficking.
The dignitary also pointed out that Peru’s commitment to the international agenda is based on the promotion of dialogue and cooperation.
The meeting “has been an occasion for our country to reaffirm its historic vocation as a promoter of understanding among nations in the Americas, which is the means to work for a region of peace, where justice and understanding banish inequality and discrimination,” he concluded. — NNN-ANDINA
