Arab League Chief Condemns UK Government Over ‘Illegal’ Jerusalem Embassy Plan

CAIRO, Oct 6 (NNN-MENA) – Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, voiced deep concern over the recent remarks by British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, about planning to move the country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the pan-Arab body said.

In a statement, the Arab League (AL) rejected “any unilateral move that violates international laws and the historic and legal status of Jerusalem,” noting, Aboul-Gheit has extended his concern via a televised address to the British Conservative Party Conference on Tuesday.

In his address, the AL chief stressed the importance of commitment to the two-state solution, as an agreed-upon formula for reaching a final settlement between the Israeli and the Palestinian sides, the statement added.

He warned against “any illegal measure that could jeopardise the possibility of applying the two-state solution on the ground, in the future.”

He called on the British government to adopt practical policies and plans, for launching a peaceful process that will lead to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state on the border of 1967.

Late last month, Truss told Israeli Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, that, she is reviewing the location of Britain’s embassy in Israel. Lapid tweeted that he was grateful to her for considering moving the embassy to Jerusalem.– NNN-MENA
