Haiti confirms five new cases of cholera, one death

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Oct 6 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Haitian Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed five new cases of cholera and one death, while 52 other suspected patients are being under health surveillance.

33 patients are under 19 years of age and four of them have not yet turned one year old, in addition, 41 people are currently hospitalized.

Cité Soleil, a commune in the north of Haiti´s capital, is reported as most hit with 35 suspected cases, followed by Port-au-Prince, Petion Ville and Delmas with three and two cases, respectively.

A possible monkeypox case was also reported in Mirebalais, a city of the Centre department. Authorities called for the population to comply with health protocols to fight off transmission.

On Wednesday, the UN Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned the fresh outbreak proves Haiti´s present critical situation, at a time as the most vulnerable have no access to basic health services, drinking water, hygiene and sanitation.

Lacking hydrocarbons, even in black market, it has caused prices to skyrocket and as a result the domestic economy is slowing down and many companies are forced to shut down. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
