UN supports Cuba’s response after Hurricane Ian´s wake

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 5 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The UN representation in Cuba, led by resident coordinator Consuelo Vidal-Bruce, supports national authorities in addressing the needs of the Cuban people most affected by Hurricane Ian´s wake, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said.

At a press conference, Dujarric reported that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) donated over eight tons of medical supplies and medicines to be distributed in the most ravaged areas.

Dujarric also recalled the delivery of a kit with supplies for the country´s health sector, which includes backpacks for health professionals who serve the affected communities.

Similarly, thanks to the Mexican embassy´s support, 20 chainsaws were recently sent to Cuba so as to help clean up the roads and contribute to restoring power service, Dujarric stated.

Cuba is presently coordinating pressing actions with international organizations to face the ravages left by Ian´s wake, especially in the western province of Pinar del Río, while progressing in recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, US Congresswoman Barbara Lee urged President Joe Biden to provide immediate assistance to Cuba to support the country´s recovery from ravages caused by Hurricane Ian.

On Twitter, the Blue Party member made the call to the president public assuring it is a criterion shared with House Representatives Gregory Meeks and Jim McGovern.

“In the wake of Hurricane Ian, @RepGregoryMeeks, @RepMcGovern and I are calling @POTUS to immediately offer humanitarian assistance to the Cuban people,” Lee tweeted, while adding that it is not time to let the history between the two countries stand in the way of cooperation.

Through the letter, Lee made clear her support for the growing demand to aid the Cuban people who, after Hurricane Ian´s wake, are currently facing up the worsening of an already harsh economic situation aggravated by the tightening of the US government’s blockade.

Currently, several solidarity organizations with Cuba such as the Global Anti-Blockade Movement (NEMO), CubanaKoa Foundation and the EL PAN Project, are raising funds in the United States to aid the Cuban people hit by the life-threatening hurricane.

In a joint statement, these solidarity groups called for contributions to benefitting children´s wards, community centers, nursing homes and those people most hit by the hurricane Ian´s wake. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
