UNESCO implements integration program for refugees and migrants in northern Peru

LIMA, Sept 28 (NNN-ANDINA) — The office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Peru has launched the Peru-Ecuador Binational Program “From displacement to integration,” which seeks to benefit refugees and migrants in northern regions of the country.

The initiative, which is carried out in partnership with WeWorld Peru, the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (IDEHPUCP), ChildFund International, and the University of Azuay in Ecuador, aims to establish integrated and productive communities, for the benefit of refugees and migrants.

Unesco Peru stated that the program is one of the five international projects selected from Lives in Dignity, a grant facility financed by the European Union and supported by the technical assistance of the United Nations Office for Project Services —UNOPS International.

This initiative will be implemented in the cities of Trujillo, Chiclayo, and Piura, as well as in Ecuadorian cities of Cuenca and Guayaquil.

Likewise, the program’s implementation period will run from August 2022 to July 2024.

“From displacement to integration” aims to provide families in refugee and migrant communities who transit through the Peru-Ecuador migratory corridor with access to sustainable livelihoods through university education and access to seed capital, for the strengthening of cultural enterprises.

Likewise, children and teenagers are expected to have access to education as a universal right in the public system.

As a result of this process, the project will contribute to strengthening the sense of security and enjoyment of human rights, in a logic of integration between cities that are part of the program.

The launch event included a technical panel made up of representatives of participating institutions from Peru and Ecuador.

It addressed issues related to economic development and means of subsistence, access to integrated basic services, as well as protection in the development of security and enjoyment of human rights.

The presentation of the program in Ecuador will take place at the University of Azuay on Sept 29 and will include the participation of implementing partners and authorities from Ecuador. — NNN-ANDINA
