HAVANA, Sept 26 (NNN-ACN) — The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz received the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, on Saturday.

In the fraternal exchange, both leaders referred to the historic relationship between the two countries since 1960, when diplomatic ties were established.

The Cambodian premier, who arrived on Friday, recalled his visit to Cuba in 1999, when he received the José Martí Order from the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

He also highlighted medical collaboration as a pillar in the relations developed over the years.

Hun Sen said that the Cambodian people have not forgotten what Cuba has helped Cambodia at the difficult time after the country’s liberation from the genocidal regime of Pol Pot.

The Cambodian Premier recalled that at that time, Cuba helped Cambodia in the fight against imperialism and the genocide regime.

Hun Sen emphasised that the relations between Cambodia and Cuba, particularly the political one, remain strong despite challenges.

For his part, Raúl Castro extended a warm welcome to the Prime Minister’s visit to Cuba and thanked him for his courtesy call.

Raúl Castro also expressed his gratitude to Hun Sen and the Royal Government of Cambodia for donating 6,000 tonnes of milled rice to the Government and people of Cuba.

Raul also referred to Cambodia’s management as president pro tempore of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ratified the will to strengthen Cuba’s cooperation with this regional bloc.

Hun Sen’s trip was originally planned for March 2020 ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Cuba. However, the Covid-19 pandemic caused its postponement for more than two years. — NNN-ACN
