Cuba continues leading world vaccination against Covid-19

HAVANA, Sept 23 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Cuba, with 400 doses per 100 inhabitants, leads the world’s vaccination process against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes Covid-19.

Such a result is possible thanks to a campaign carried out in Cuba in a staggered manner with homemade vaccines.

Recently, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) ratified that the Cuban-made Abdala vaccine has proved to be safe, effective, and well tolerated.

Cuba also developed the Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, created by the Finlay Vaccines Institute, to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, and two vaccine candidates (Soberana 01 and Mambisa) that are in clinical trials with major results, according to official sources.

At a meeting of the Government’s Temporary Working Group for the prevention and control of Covid-19 on Wednesday, the director of Science and Technological Innovation at the Ministry of Public Health, Iliana Morales, explained that Cuba will administer 42 million doses of home-made vaccines to citizens.

Only 67.9 percent of the world’s population has received at least one dose; however, in low-income countries, immunization has only reached 22.5 percent of their inhabitants, she said.

She pointed out that only seven countries, including Cuba, have more than 90 percent of the population fully vaccinated, while booster doses at the international level do not exceed 31 percent.

Morales noted that in Cuba, 1,930,357 children and adolescents, accounting for 98.8 percent of people in those ages who are vaccinable, are fully immunized; and 1,459,392 have received the booster dose. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
