Colombian woman killed, 6 foreigners injured in Sofia fire

SOFIA (Bulgaria), Sept 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Colombian woman was killed and six foreigners, including two children, were injured in a fire that erupted early Saturday in a hotel in downtown Sofia, authorities said.

The fire started on the third floor of a hotel with 70 rooms which was fully occupied and all the guests were foreigners, Sofia fire department deputy chief Lyubomir Barov told the public BNR radio.

“A woman died, two elderly men were hospitalised and two children — aged one year and seven months and 12 years — were admitted to hospital as a precautionary measure,” he said.

BNR cited hospital sources as saying that a 21-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man were also in hospital after inhaling fumes.

The interior ministry did not specify the nationality of the victims but the state-run BTA news agency reported that the dead woman was Colombian.

Budget flights and cheap hotels have made the Bulgarian capital a popular destination for foreigners. — NNN-AGENCIES
