NEW DELHI, Sept 15 (NNN-Bernama) — The prime ministers of India and Pakistan are attending the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit starting in Uzbekistan on Thursday.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the annual meeting of the Council of Heads of State in the city of Samarkand, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.
Shehbaz will also have bilateral meetings with other leaders, the ministry said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the leadership summit and is likely to hold a few bilateral meetings on the sidelines, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Both India and Pakistan joined the SCO as members in 2017.
Its founding members in 2001 were China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
“This year’s summit will issue the Samarkand Declaration, which will be a comprehensive political declaration on the SCO’s position on international politics, economy and a range of other aspects,” SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming said in a Chinese media interview this week.
The leaders will also discuss climate change, global supply chains, and energy and food security issues.
