Lisbon, Apr 9 (NNN-Prensa Latina) On Monday, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) reiterated its solidarity with the Brazilian people and demanded the release of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who served an unjust year in prison.
Through a communiqué, the CPPC denounced ‘the serious anti-democratic process, the institutional coup and the arbitrary and violent measures against social and political activists’ in the South American giant.
It also demanded respect for the rights of the former president and the struggle of Brazilians for their sovereignty and against the repressive and authoritarian power of President Jair Bolsonaro.
Together with other non-governmental organisations, the Council mobilised the day before in Lisbon in support of the international initiative for the release of Lula.
During the demonstration, the participants criticized the strong disinformation campaign deployed to justify illegal acts such as aggressions against the leaders of the Workers’ Party.
The attacks against democracy in Brazil are part of a broad plan of interference and destabilization, promoted by the United States against Latin American nations, including Venezuela and Cuba,’ said the CPPC.
However, ‘in the struggle for sovereignty, justice, progress and peace, the peoples will know how to overcome all obstacles and emerge victorious’, the organisation added.
