Armed men gun down athlete in N. Afghanistan

KUNDUZ (Afghanistan), April 8 (NNN-Xinhua) — Unidentified gunmen shot dead a famous sportsman in Kunduz city, the capital of Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province, on Monday, provincial police spokesman Inamudin Rahmani said.

Kamil Karimi, a taekwondo star and trainer of the self-defense martial art who had brought several medals to his country from regional competitions over the past couple of years, was gunned down by armed men in the morning rush hour, the spokesman said.

Efforts are underway to identify the culprits, who made their escape, and bring them to justice.

Anti-government armed militants have killed and injured athletes in target killings, besides conducting suicide attacks on football and volleyball grounds in parts of Afghanistan over the past few years. — NNN-XINHUA
