NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (NNN-PTI) – India added 11 more wetlands to the list of the Ramsar wetlands of international importance, taking the number of such sites in the country to 75, the federal Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said, yesterday.
The 11 newly designated wetland sites include four in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Indian-controlled Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. They total 76,316 hectares in area.
“India adds 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites, to make total 75 Ramsar sites covering an area of 1,326,678 hectares,” the ministry said. “Designation of these sites would help in conservation and management of wetlands and wise use of their resources.”
India is one of the contracting parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat, which was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
In India, Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of 14 Ramsar sites, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 10.
