The fired South Sudanese Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny |
JUBA, Aug 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit fired his press secretary a day after he sent home the Finance minister and Central Bank governor.
President Kiir sacked Ateny Wek Ateny, who served in his office for the last nine years, through a presidential decree aired on state-run TV SSBC Friday evening.
The President, who rarely discloses his reasons for the sackings, did not say why he let Ateny go, apart from citing the constitutional powers that permit him to appoint and dismiss public servants.
Ateny, known for his controversial statements defending the President, was appointed in 2013. He is a lawyer and a former practicing journalist who was a critic of Kiir’s government before his appointment.
About his sacking, Ateny said, “I heard about my removal on television. I was not told the reason I was fired. I am very grateful to the President for giving me an opportunity to serve the country.” — NNN-AGENCIES
