ADEN, Aug 3 (NNN-YPA) – The United Nations announced yesterday that, Yemen’s internationally-recognised government and the Houthi militia, have agreed to renew the ongoing nationwide truce for another two months.
“I am pleased to announce that the parties have agreed to extend the truce, under the same terms, for an additional two months from Aug 2 until Oct 2,” UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg said, in a written statement released on the UN website.
“This truce extension includes a commitment from the parties to intensify negotiations, to reach an expanded truce agreement as soon as possible,” said the envoy.
He expressed his gratitude “to the leaderships of the parties, for agreeing to this truce extension and for their continued constructive engagements, in implementing and seeking an expansion to the truce.”
The UN envoy confirmed that the main objective of the current truce continues to be, to provide tangible relief to civilians and to create a conducive environment for reaching a peaceful settlement to the conflict, through a comprehensive political process.
Grundberg’s declaration came, after he held a series of meetings with representatives of Yemen’s warring sides and high-ranking politicians, during the past months, to ensure a continuation of the nationwide truce that came into effect on Apr 2.
According to the state-run Saba news agency, Yemen’s internationally-recognised government, welcomed the extension of the truce according to the previous provisions.– NNN-YPA
