Jordan Called For Continued Support As Syrian Refugees’ Burden Grows

AMMAN, Jul 27 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan, yesterday, called for continued support, as its burden of hosting Syrian refugees is growing.

Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Nasser Shraideh, made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Assistant High Commissioner for Operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Raouf Mazou.

Shraideh said, Jordan hosts more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees since 2011, which increased the burden on the country’s budget, particularly on subsidised commodities and the water, education, health and energy sectors.

He called for direct support by the international community, to help control the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on the Jordanian economy.

For his part, Mazou expressed his appreciation for the coordination and cooperation of the Jordanian government, and reaffirmed the United Nation’s keenness to help, urging the international community to support Jordan, in fulfilling its humanitarian role.– NNN-PETRA
