GEORGE TOWN (Malaysia), July 21 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian public university, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), has been selected to join the establishment of the Osaka University (OU) ASEAN Campuses and as a host in Malaysia, as both universities embark on a new level of partnership.
In a statement, USM said both parties have officially affirmed the partnership through a virtual Signing Ceremony of Addendum on July 14, which also indicated USM and OU’s commitment to strengthen their relationship beyond research laboratories.
Following the signing, USM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Faisal Rafiq Mahmad Adikan said there would be more meaningful cooperation such as in establishing and strengthening USM-OU joint laboratories for carrying out joint research activities, developing and conducting international joint/double degree programmes, and participation in university-industry collaboration.
“I have been made to understand that the Osaka University ASEAN Campus Sustainable Development Goals for Co-creation Network comprise several research areas such as climate change, air pollution, food loss and plastic waste, which match well with the strength of USM’s researchers.
“Seeing the similarity in research interest, I fully support the move towards research collaboration not only between OU and USM but with industries who are interested to participate in our university-industry collaboration,” he added.
Meanwhile, USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed said the smart partnership between both parties was aimed at finding solutions that matter to human kind, solutions to global challenges and working together in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
