Russia reports first case of monkeypox

MOSCOW, July 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Russia said it had detected the first case of monkeypox in the country in a man who returned from a trip to several European nations.

“The infection was found in a young man who came back from a trip through European countries and went to a medical facility with a characteristic rash,” health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.

The risk of infection to others was limited, it said.

“The disease is proceeding in a mild form. There is no threat to life,” Rospotrebnadzor said.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. It is endemic in parts of Africa.

More than 50 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease as confirmed cases exceed 7,600. — NNN-AGENCIES
