BANDAR-E-LENGEH, Iran, Jul 2 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran was shaken near Bandar-e Lengeh, Hormozgan, by an earthquake of magnitude 6.1, early this morning, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre, at 3:24 am local time today. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones, as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicentre. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bandar-e Lengeh (pop. 22,800), located 46 km from the epicentre, Qeshm (pop. 25,000), 106 km away, and Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) 113 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.– NNN-IRNA
